Co-Founder & Product Designer

Austin Serio

Co-Founder & Product Designer

Austin is the co-founder and product designer of ShockTalk. They are Italian-American on their father’s side, and the descendant of white and Indigenous sharecroppers on their mother’s side. Austin is both Chicoran Shakori, and an honorary member of the Waccamaw Indian People of South Carolina.

Over six years — much of it as a solo designer and engineer — Austin built ShockTalk from a prototype into a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform connecting Indigenous communities with Indigenous providers.

Austin believes care should be owned by both the communities and workers involved in the care delivery process, which is why ShockTalk is built as a cooperative rather than a conventional startup.
